Hot flashes and night sweats in women.

Written by the TRT Optima clinical teamUpdated

A sudden wave of heat in the middle of your day. Waking up sweaty and struggling to settle again.

When these episodes interrupt your routine or sleep, understanding the cause can help you explore relief.

Understanding the connection

Changing estrogen levels can contribute to hot flashes.

During the menopause transition, ovarian hormone production changes and estrogen declines over time. These changes are linked to hot flashes: sudden episodes of warmth, often involving the face, neck, and chest, sometimes followed by sweating or chills.

When they occur during sleep, they are commonly called night sweats. They can begin while you are still having periods.

Relief can involve hormonal or nonhormonal treatment.

Systemic HRT is the most effective treatment for menopausal hot flashes and night sweats. Suitability depends on your medical history and preferences.

Nonhormonal treatments are also available for women who cannot use HRT or prefer another approach.

The pattern helps guide the conversation.

Tell your physician when episodes started, how often they happen, whether your periods have changed, and how your sleep is affected. Bring information about medications and any treatment you already use.

Night sweats can also have other causes, including medicines, anxiety, or low blood sugar. Regular drenching sweats, particularly with fever or unexplained weight loss, deserve medical assessment.
