Understanding the connection
Menopause can change where your body stores fat.
Declining estrogen during menopause contributes to a shift toward abdominal fat. At the same time, aging, changes in muscle mass, activity, and sleep can influence overall weight.
Weight and body composition are related, but they describe different things. A change in fat distribution or muscle can matter even when the number on the scale changes little.
Other hormonal conditions may be relevant.
An underactive thyroid can contribute to weight gain, often alongside symptoms such as fatigue, feeling cold, or constipation.
Weight gain alone does not establish a thyroid diagnosis.

Look at the trend and the wider health picture.
Your physician considers how quickly things have changed, your medications, sleep, eating patterns, activity, and relevant medical history.
Assessment may include measurements and tests appropriate to your risk factors. The resulting plan can address nutrition, activity, menopause symptoms, or other treatment options according to your needs.
HRT may help disruptive menopause symptoms, but it is not a weight-loss treatment.

Questions about weight and body composition
Can my waist change without much change in weight?
Yes. Fat distribution and muscle changes can affect your shape without a large change on the scale.
Will HRT help me lose weight?
HRT is not prescribed as a weight-loss treatment. Menopause care and weight-management care may be considered together when both are relevant.
Should I get my hormones checked first?
Your physician decides which tests would be useful based on your symptoms and history. A standard hormone panel is not automatically the first step.
