Understanding the connection
Estrogen helps maintain vaginal tissue.
Lower estrogen around menopause can make vaginal tissue thinner, drier, and less elastic. This can contribute to irritation or discomfort during sex.
Local treatment may help. Options can include vaginal moisturizers, lubricants, or low-dose vaginal estrogen, depending on your symptoms and medical history.
Dryness can occur before menopause too.
Breastfeeding, some medications, and hormonal contraception can contribute.
Irritating products and other conditions may cause similar symptoms, so persistent discomfort should be assessed.

Understanding the symptoms helps identify the next step.
Tell your physician when symptoms started and whether you have discomfort, itching, discharge, or bleeding. Mention products you use and any current hormone treatment.
An examination may be needed. Your physician explains whether local treatment, further investigation, or referral is appropriate.
When to seek assessment
Bleeding after sex, between periods, or after menopause should be medically assessed rather than assumed to be dryness.

Questions about dryness and comfort
Can this happen if I am not menopausal?
Yes. Dryness can occur at other stages of life, including during breastfeeding or while using certain medications.
Are lubricants and moisturizers the same?
Lubricants reduce friction during sexual activity. Vaginal moisturizers are intended to help with ongoing dryness.
Will I need hormone treatment?
Not necessarily. Treatment depends on the cause, your symptoms, and your medical history.
